Why does my root canal tooth feel different?

Because half its sensory system is gone and the other half is not. Removing the pulp takes away hot, cold and sweet sensation from inside the tooth, but the periodontal ligament that suspends the root in bone is untouched and still reports pressure, tapping and biting. That mismatch is why the tooth can feel dull, wooden or oddly present without hurting. For most people the awareness fades over weeks as the ligament settles.

What was removed and what was not
The pulp is the soft tissue core inside the tooth: nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue. A root canal removes it, disinfects the space, and fills it with gutta percha, a rubber like material. From that point the inside of the tooth has no sensation at all.
The outside is a different story. The root sits in bone, connected by the periodontal ligament, and that ligament is packed with receptors that detect pressure and position. It was never touched by the treatment. So the tooth can still tell you when you are biting on it, when food is caught against it, and when someone taps it, while being completely blind to temperature.

Why proprioception matters more than people think
The ligament is how you judge how hard you are biting. On an ordinary tooth, it is doing a constant, unconscious job of moderating force. After a root canal, that feedback loop is intact but the pain warning from inside the tooth is not.
The practical consequence is that a root canal treated tooth will not warn you the way a live tooth does. You can crack it, or grind on it, or bite something hard on it, without the sharp signal that would normally stop you. That is a real part of why crowns are recommended on back teeth: the tooth is both weaker and quieter.
When different becomes wrong
Different should be neutral and fading. If the difference is painful, growing, or accompanied by anything visible, it is no longer just the tooth being quiet.
The specific things worth acting on are pain on biting that is not improving, any swelling or gum bump, sensitivity to heat in a tooth that should have no nerve, and a sharp jolt when you release a bite, which points at a crack rather than at the root canal.

Is a root canal tooth a dead tooth?
The pulp inside is gone, but the tooth is still attached and nourished by the ligament and bone around it. Calling it dead undersells that it is a functioning part of your bite.
Will it ever feel completely normal again?
Most people stop noticing it within weeks to a couple of months, especially after the permanent crown goes on. It will never respond to cold again, but that is not something you notice day to day.
Can I feel a root canal tooth get a cavity?
Not reliably, and this is the risk. Decay under or around the crown can progress without pain because there is no pulp to complain. That is why regular checkups and x rays matter more, not less, for these teeth.

It should not be. Once the pulp is removed, the treated tooth has no nerve to detect hot, cold or sweet, so genuine temperature sensitivity in that tooth is not part of normal recovery. What you are usually feeling is a neighbouring tooth, an exposed root surface, or the gum that was clamped during treatment. Persistent heat sensitivity in particular deserves checking, because it can point to a missed canal or a nearby untreated tooth.
Pain that only happens when you bite usually comes from one of two things: the filling sits a fraction too high so that tooth takes the whole bite, or the periodontal ligament around the root is still inflamed from treatment. The ligament version fades over three to five days. The high filling version does not fade, because every bite re injures it, and it is corrected in a couple of minutes with a drill and articulating paper.
It is common and it is treatable. The AAE's position is that root canal treatment itself does not discolor the tooth, but teeth that lost their pulp often darken anyway, usually because blood products and tissue breakdown stained the dentine from the inside before or during treatment. Because the stain is internal, external whitening will not fix it. Internal bleaching, a veneer or a crown are the options that work.
Weeks, not months. The permanent crown or filling should follow the root canal as soon as your dentist can arrange it, usually within a few weeks. A long delay leaves the tooth sealed only by a temporary filling, which leaks over time and lets bacteria back into the canals, and leaves the hollowed out tooth unsupported. Root fracture is the most common reason root canal treated teeth end up extracted, and a fractured root cannot be repaired.
